From April 1-7, 2022, The Athens International Film and Video Festival (AIFVF) will present over 260 films representing over 60 countries in competition at the historic Athena Cinema in uptown Athens, OH. This year’s festival features an incredible array of special events and screenings.

Black History Month 2022 has just passed and I’m thinking about how it is that we know Black people that we often do not recognize while they are creating history right now. One such person is John L. Butler, Jr., a member of the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) and The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Professor Butler was the Manager of the Peterson Sound Studio and instructor of sound recording at Ohio University for more than 30 years. He has been a friend of mine since 1969 when I took my first job working for Young Life Campaign in Pittsburgh after graduating from Ohio University. He was the director of the program.

Taylor Johnson came to the School of Film three years ago to learn more about filmmaking and to explore the type of filmmaker they are. Now, Taylor is in the post-production of their final film at OU and it’s their most ambitious film of their career yet. Taylor shares their process before the film, gives insight into the story as well as some advice for young students.

Lindsey Martin is an assistant professor at Ohio University School of Film who teaches students about screenwriting, film production, digital animation, and film criticism. While Lindsey is an inspiring teacher to many of her students, she is also an accomplished filmmaker. She recently completed her latest animation film, Pottero.

Beginning October 15th and running until October 24th, the Athens International Film and Video Festival makes its long-awaited return, with a full two years’ worth of independent feature length and short form films filling the docket. With the pandemic forcing the postponement of last year’s films, the combination of the 2020 entries along with the new batch from this year will make up over 500 films in competition, all presented at the Athena Cinema in Athens, Ohio.

Back by popular demand, AIFVF returns this October with two years of incredible films. From October 15th – 24th, 2021 The Athens International Film and Video Festival (AIFVF) will present over 500 films in competition at the historic Athena Cinema in uptown Athens, OH. This year’s festival combines both the (originally postponed due to covid) AIFVF 2020 and AIFVF 2021 festivals and features an incredible array of special events and screenings.

Max is from Dayton, Ohio, and has been making movies since he was 11. Last year, after his first year of film school shifted online, Max took the initiative to make his own short film over the summer of 2020, which has been selected into several festivals and shown in small cinemas in Ohio.

Filmmaking in any given year is already a stressful endeavor, but add in a pandemic, and it can rightfully fry some nerves. However, School of Film’s Keisha Martin credits the smoothness of her recently wrapped thesis project, "Pancake’s Pasture”, to an intangible element not explicitly taught in school - kindness.
