Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts

William F. Condee (J. Richard Hamilton/Baker and Hostetler Professor of Humanities and Professor of Theater) is the author of two books, Coal and Culture: The Opera House in Appalachia (Ohio University Press, 2005) and Theatrical Space: A Guide for Directors and Designers (Scarecrow Press, 1995), as well as "Experiments with Architectural Space in the German Theatre," in A History of German Theatre (Cambridge University Press, 2008) and "Architecture for the Twentieth Century: Imagining the Theatre in the 1920s," in Experimenters, Rebels, and Disparate Voices: The Theatre of the 1920s Celebrates American Diversity (Greenwood, 2003).

His articles on theatre space have appeared in Journal of American Drama & Theatre, Architectural Review, World Architecture, Journal of American Culture, Scenography International, Theatre Design and Technology, Themes in Drama and McNeese Review. His articles on Southeast Asian puppetry have appeared in Puppetry International, Asian Journal of University Education and Studies in Theatre and Performance. Articles on other subjects have appeared in Interdisciplinary Studies, Theatre Topics, Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance, Theatre Survey, Theatre Annual, Western European Stages and The Eugene O'Neill Review.

Prof. Condee served as Kohei Miura Visiting Professor at Chubu University (Japan), Fulbright Senior Specialist at the Leipzig University (Germany) and University of Malaya (Malaysia), and has been invited to lecture internationally at East China Normal University (Shanghai), Dankook University (S. Korea), German Association of American Studies, Danish National School of Performing Arts, Hindu Dharma Institute (Bali), Tsinghua University (Beijing), Nanjing University and the Prague Quadrennial.

Regarding teaching, Condee received numerous awards including Distinguished Teaching Professor, Presidential Teacher, Faculty Excellence, Fine Arts Outstanding Teacher, Honors Tutorial Outstanding Tutor and Ohio Magazine’s Excellence in Education. He is the co-founder of the Bruning Teaching Academy, and has been co-investigator for major grants in support of teaching excellence.

In addition, Dr. Condee has appeared on Broadway as a clown in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, has performed shadow puppetry in Bali, and has competed in the Boston, New York, Athens and Wampus Cat Marathons.
