The Photography + Integrated Media department and the School of Art + Design proudly present the exhibition Existence: Text + Image on view January 19 through February 20 at the Ohio University Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall. The opening reception will take place virtually in conjunction with an artist talk by juror Efrem Zelony-Mindell, Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 pm EST. 

This exhibition showcased 21 artists who explore the ideas that examine what it means to exist today through the use of text and image. 

Existence: Text + Image is part of Alternatives, a biennial juried exhibition organized by Ohio University’s MFA Photography + Integrated Media program in the School of Art. Since its beginning in 1980, Alternatives has achieved national recognition for its leadership in forging new definitions in the medium by emphasizing the work of photographers in the conceptual forefront of the practice. 

This year’s juror, Efrem Zelony-Mindell (they/them,) is a curator, writer, and artist. Their curatorial endeavors include shows in New York City: n e w f l e s h, Are You Loathsome, Familiar Strange, and This Is Not Here. They write about art for Unseen, DEAR DAVE, VICE, Musée Magazine, SPOT, and essays for artists’ monographs. Their first book n e w f l e s h, published by Gnomic Book and shortlisted for the Paris Photo | Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Award 2020, is now available and has been collected by many international libraries and archives. They received their BFA from the School of Visual Arts, a college in New York City, and currently work in Brooklyn, NY. 

The artists included in this exhibition are: Michael Borowski, Ian Campbell, Jesse Egnar, Atefeh Farajolahzadeh, Zachary Francois, Felicity Gunn, Paige Fuentes, Jenica Heintzelman, Evan Hume, Nicola Baldazzi & Veronica Lanconelli, Philip LaVelle, Emily Levack, Mikayla Millard, Alissa Ohashi, Molly Phalan, Andre Ramos-Woodard, Ronojoy Sinha, Nathan Storey Freeman, Julia Wilson, and Kelly Xintaris. 

The Ohio University Art Gallery is located on the 5th floor of Seigfred Hall. Hours are Tuesday 12-4 pm, Thursday 3-7 pm, and Saturday 12-4 pm.
