Dutcher is an experimental economist and incorporates traditional and behavioral economic components in studies to understand more about non-monetary factors affecting the productivity of workers in a firm. One area he has specifically looked into involves how different kinds of inter-firm competitions, like those where the "best" employee is promoted or the "worst" is demoted, affect employees effort provisions.

He has also looked into issues related to how working remotely affects productivity of creative work, routine work and work done in teams. He explores the useful components needed for creative production, which is a necessary component to innovation.
