UNIVERSITY Equity and Civil Rights Compliance

Message from Ohio University Executive Director and Title IX Coordinator Sara L. Trower on
U.S. Department of Education’s interim guidance on Title IX

_______________________________________

Today the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights released interim guidance on Title IX and campus sexual misconduct. I write today to affirm Ohio University’s commitment to provide an educational and workplace environment that is free from sexual misconduct and other forms of gender-based discrimination.

Title IX remains the law of the land. We will carefully evaluate the interim guidance to assess what, if any, impacts it has on our sexual misconduct policy and processes. We remain committed to providing a fair and equitable process that respects and supports every person impacted by reports of sexual misconduct. Ohio University has continually worked to ensure that complaints are evaluated by professionally-trained staff and investigations are conducted in accordance with due process. Our practices are consistent with the Department of Education’s 2001  Revised Sexual Harassment Guidance, which the U.S. Department of Education reaffirmed today.

The safety and well-being of our students and colleagues is our top priority. It is the responsibility of each of us to continue to work to achieve a culture of respect.

The Office of University Equity and Civil Rights Compliance (ECRC)

ECRC ensures that the University maintains an employment and educational environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. ECRC monitors  the educational environment and workplace to stop, remediate, and prevent discrimination on the basis of protected status. We make policy recommendations, offer training, and provide avenues for the resolution of grievances which are based on protected status. This includes discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, age, ethnicity, national origin, national ancestry, sex, pregnancy, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, military service or veteran status, mental or physical disability, or genetic information.

ECRC supports the University's efforts to foster a diverse student body and workforce; therefore ECRC often collaborates with campus partners who have responsibilities for those efforts, such as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and University Human Resources.

The ECRC office houses the university Title IX Coordinator, who can be reached by email at titleix@ohio.edu or by phone at 740-593-9140.
