Balsa Wood Bridge Competition

In this competition, students will design and construct a bridge out of balsa wood. Bridges will be judged on strength and lightness. The strength to weight ratio will be used to determine the overall winner.

Civil Site Design Competition

Formerly referred to as the AutoCAD competition, students will create a design in AutoCAD according to the specifications that will be provided. Participants will submit their designs before the conference. During the conference, a change order will be issued and participants will have to modify their designs accordingly. Participants will be judged on accuracy, speed and the process they used to create the layout and drawing.

Concrete Bat Competition

The concrete bat competition involves students designing a baseball bat out of concrete and rebar. Bats will be judged based on aesthetics, structural integrity and collective batting distance of a team.

Concrete Canoe Competition

The Concrete Canoe Competition involves a canoe that the students designed and fabricated using light-weight concrete. The competition consists of a design paper, an oral presentation, overall product judging, and races. The races consist of a men and women's 200 meter sprint and a 600 meter slalom/endurance races, and a co-ed 200 meter sprint. All of these aspects are used to determine an overall winner and the top team will advance to the national competition.

Environmental Competition

The Environmental Competition involves the design and construction of a water treatment system to remove contaminants from a water sample. Teams will be judged on the design poster, cost, construction speed, design, and effluent water quality.

Geotechnical Competition

The Geotechnical competition involves testing students' knowledge on the ability to effectively form a structure composed of soil. The structure will be judged based on height, construction time and use of other materials.

Steel Bridge Competition

The Steel Bridge Competition involves the design, fabrication, construction, and testing of a 21-22 feet steel structure which meets specifications set by ASCE and the American Institute of Steel Construction each year. At the competition, the bridge is judged on construction speed, lightness, stiffness, economy, efficiency, and aesthetics. The top three bridges from our conference will advance to the national competition.

At the competition, the bridge is judged on construction speed, lightness, stiffness, economy, efficiency, and aesthetics. The top three bridges from our conference will advance to the national competition.

Surveying Competition

The surveying competition involves a three person team that must demonstrate proper land surveying techniques. During this timed competition, teams will be judged on accuracy as they do a site layout and determine elevation points.

Technical Paper Competition

In the Technical Paper competition, students will write a paper on a topic which is the subject of the DANIEL W. MEAD PRIZE FOR STUDENTS. Participants will submit their paper and present their findings to a panel of judges at the competition. This paper may also be submitted for consideration in the ASCE National Competition.
