The Russ College of Engineering and Technology announces that Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Dale Masel, who is also chair of the Department of ISE in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, has been appointed director of the Center for Advanced Systems and Transportation Logistics Engineering (CASTLE). He succeeds Russ Professor of ISE Bob Judd.

Since 2000, Masel’s research has focused on a cost estimation project for GE, in which OHIO researchers and students develop methods that allow engineers to evaluate the cost of their designs, primarily for jet engines. The project, which has produced significant savings for GE, has supported seven faculty members and almost 50 undergraduate and graduate students.

“Dale has been the de facto leader of the GE cost estimation work through CASTLE for a number of years,” said Russ College Dean Dennis Irwin. “This is a fitting recognition of his influential role in the success of CASTLE.”

Research within CASTLE aims to improve the design and manufacturing of new products and transportation systems, and the associated costs. OHIO engineers and students use modeling data help predict production and transportation challenges and costs before they’re made on the manufacturing floor, saving businesses time, effort and money – and improving products for consumers.

“The center is an important resource for helping faculty in the Department of ISE initiate research,” Masel said. “I'm looking forward to helping increase the impact the center has for ISE faculty and their research clients, by helping faculty develop their research in order to obtain grant funding that ultimately supports our graduate students and provides research opportunities for our undergraduate students.”

A member of the Department of ISE since 1998, Masel was named chair in 2018. His research also includes a collaboration with Geisinger Health to develop improved supply chain management methods for hospitals.

Masel is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the International Cost Estimating and Analysis Association (ICEAA), and APICS. From 2004 to 2013, he was also a member of the College-Industrial Council on Material Handling Education.

Masel is also director of the Russ College’s Karol A. and Jo Ondick Engineering Ambassadors Program, a leadership development program in which top students in the Russ College lead student recruitment tours, promote the college to various constituents, host distinguished alumni, and participate in professional development opportunities.
