As the population gets older, slowing and reversing muscle growth and loss of strength are urgent healthcare problems. Muscle loss and weakness are significant contributing factors to falls, fractures, loss of independence and an overall reduced quality of life in the elderly. In the next Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Seminar, Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences Sonsoles de Lacalle will discuss a curious chemical called Myostatin and how it can be used to inhibit muscle deterioration in aging. The lecture, “Myostatin and the Nervous System,” will take place Tues., Nov. 8, from 9-10:20 a.m. in Stocker Center 103.
