Outstanding Ohio University engineering and technology students honored

Athens, OH (May 21, 2008) – The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University honored students Sunday night for leadership and outstanding academics in 2007-2008. The awardees were recognized at the college’s annual student awards celebration, hosted by Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) senior Gregory Smith of Doylestown, Penn., received the evening’s top two awards: the Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Senior Award and the Robe Leadership Institute’s Loehr Leader Award.

Chosen by the Robe Leadership Institute Board, the Loehr winner receives a cash award of $500 and a plaque. Smith and other Loehr Award nominees, who received $100 cash awards just for being nominated, were chosen by their respective departments. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering nominated Cody Tuttle of Bellaire, Ohio; Civil Engineering nominated Drew Hatton of Frankfort, Ohio; Electrical Engineering and Computer Science nominated Megan Schneider of Pickerington, Ohio; Industrial Technology nominated Bryan Scheffel of Fairfield, Ohio; and Mechanical Engineering nominated Jared Leininger of Perry, Ohio.

Smith was also recognized by the ISE department as its outstanding senior.

“These students are our best, our brightest, our most talented, our most hard-working, and our most caring,” said Dennis Irwin, Russ College dean. “They are the students I observe helping with schools in Ghana and footbridge construction in rural Appalachia, organizing foot races to raise money for scholarships, executing production runs for their senior projects,” Irwin added.

Each department also honored top students with plaques and cash awards of $100. For Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, the outstanding sophomores were Courtney Benson of Mentor, Ohio, and Courtney Abram of Chardon, Ohio. Students honored with the Keith Russ Award for outstanding juniors were Adam Mielnicki of Garfield Heights, Ohio, and Bill Wakefield of Poland, Ohio. The outstanding senior was Tyler Morgan of Franklin Furnace, Ohio.

For Civil Engineering, the Outstanding Senior and Senior Academic Achievement Award went to H. Patrick Karnes of Greenfield, Ohio. The first runner-up for the Senior Academic Achievement Award was Jonathon Cozad of Logan, Ohio, and the second runners-up were Erica Baird of Madison, Ohio, and Jourdan Siemer of Lorning, Ohio. The Junior Achievement Award recipient was Dustin Fisher of Delphos, Ohio. First runner-up for the Junior Achievement Award was Ryan Kent of Ray, Ohio, and the second runner-up was Justin Hartfield of Grandville, Ohio.

For Industrial and Systems Engineering, the Outstanding Junior Award went to Ron Dravenstott of Ashland, Ohio.

For Industrial Technology, the Academic Excellence Award went to Bryan Scheffel of Fairfield, Ohio. The F. Theodore Paige Outstanding Graduating Senior Award recipient was Gabriel Pyers of Wooster, Ohio. The Albert R. Squibb Service to the Department Award went to was Josh Lauener of Clairsville, Ohio.

For Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Outstanding Junior in Electrical Engineering recipient was Heath Honaker of The Plains, Ohio, and the Outstanding Senior in was Eric Glassner of Columbus. The Outstanding Junior in Computer Science was Matthew Sargent of Eastlake, Ohio. The Outstanding Junior in Computer Engineering was Theodore Hollingsworth of Solon, Ohio. The Outstanding Senior in Computer Engineering was Kelly Hunter of Athens, Ohio. The 2008 G.E. Smith and G.V. Smith Memorial Engineering Award went to Michael Rist of Mason, Ohio and Dean Bruckner of Athens, Ohio.

For Mechanical Engineering, the Top Sophomore Award went to Michael Groendyk of Beavercreek, Ohio. The Top Junior Award recipients were David Jones of Circleville, Ohio, and Nichole Blackmore of Parma, Ohio. The Outstanding Senior Award went to Shane Bickmeier of Shadyside, Ohio and Jared Leininger of Perry, Ohio.

Students were also honored for their achievement in cooperative education by Robbyn Turner Matthews, coordinator for career programs, for receiving an outstanding evaluation every quarter on the job. This year’s winners were Mechanical Engineering seniors Shane Bickmeier of Shadyside, Ohio and Brian Rohm of Seville, Ohio; and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering junior Bill Wakefield of Poland, Ohio.

“The banquet was all about showcasing academics and leadership,” said senior Lauren H. Logan, Tau Beta Pi president. “It’s a night dedicated to the students,” she added.
