The Russ College of Engineering and Technology has placed 36th on U.S. News & World Report’s (USNWR) list of best online graduate engineering programs for 2015, a significant jump from last year’s rank of 46.

The Russ College offers three fully online graduate programs – a master of engineering management (MEM), a master of science in civil engineering (MSCE), and a master of science in electrical engineering (MSEE). USNWR evaluated each program on a number of factors, including student engagement, faculty credentials, and student services and technology; and compared them to more than 1,200 other distance education programs.

"There are now hundreds of online programs out there for students to choose from, but students have few resources to turn to for unbiased information on distance learning," said Brian Kelly, USNWR editor and chief content officer. "Much like we've done with Best Colleges, we're collecting and analyzing data to help students answer their questions and identify programs that support their education and career goals."

The Russ College programs scored especially high marks for student engagement, placing 19th within the category.

“Our programs are designed with the student in mind,” said MEM Program Director Diana Schwerha, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering.  “We deliver a high quality program and consistently engage the student. Even though students are physically located across the country, they become friends with their colleagues in class and feel part of the program.”

MSEE Program Director and Professor of Electrical Engineering Jeff Dill said faculty credentials are what set the MSEE program apart.

“Our teaching faculty are leading experts in their fields of research, with numerous ongoing projects in-house funded by both industry and government agencies,” Dill said. “Our faculty have a unique blend of theoretical expertise, hands-on practical experience and commitment to quality education.”

The best online programs ranking, now in its fourth year, has seen a 20 percent increase in the number of programs evaluated, which is a reflection of the growing popularity of online education programs, USNWR explained in a release.

Ohio University also placed high the 2015 best colleges list, ranked as the 63rd best public college and in the top half of all national universities.
