Russ College first-years share sundaes in the sun during welcome week

First-year Russ College students filled the Stocker Center lawn on Sat., Aug. 24, for one of several Welcome Week events.

During the all-campus College Welcome, part of Ohio University’s Welcome Week, engineering and technology students gathered at the Academic & Research Center (ARC) for major-specific information sessions where they met their fellow classmates. Current and former Engineering Ambassadors shared their experiences and answered questions before directing new students on a tour of the ARC and Stocker Center.

Professor and Chair of Industrial and Systems Engineering and adviser of the Engineering Ambassadors Dale Masel said the event was well attended.

“It’s great to see the enthusiasm of our incoming students,” said Masel. “This event benefits new students to be able to learn more about their majors and informally meet their classmates. Some colleges have department chairs welcome students, but having an event that is student-planned and student-led lets first-year students get information from someone who shares their perspective.”

When the tours wrapped up, students filtered onto the Stocker Center lawn for an ice cream sundae bar, and a soak in the last bits of summer before classes started on Monday.

“I was able to meet students in my major and learning community and create lifelong friendships with a few students,” said Hagen Childers, a freshman chemical and biomolecular engineering major. “Everyone I have met so far has been welcoming and really made me feel at home inside the Russ College.”

First-year students are invited to the Russ College Involvement Fair on Tues., Sept. 10, from 4-5:30 p.m. ARC Living Room Atrium.
