The Department of Aviation at the Russ College offers short-haul air service for Ohio University faculty, staff, and official visitors on university business. For details, see the FAQ below.
How do I reserve at flight?
How many people can travel, and where?
Our current aircraft can transport as many as three passengers about as far as Cleveland, Ohio, and a little further for fewer passengers.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary according to fuel, destination and passenger variables. The average cost is about $600 per hour, but you can receive a specific quote for your trip. Late cancellation fees will apply.
What aircraft is used?
The aircraft flown is a Beechcraft Baron 55. Thanks to the landmark $124 million estate gift to the College in 2008 from 1942 electrical engineering alumnus Fritz Russ and his wife, Dolores, a Baron 58 will join the fleet to offer room for more passengers and additional training opportunities for students.
Where do flights originate and return?
All flights take off from Ohio University Gordon K. Bush Airport in Albany, Ohio.
Who is flying the plane?
Your flight will be piloted by Department of Aviation faculty or staff as captain with certification in multi-engine aircraft, and an Ohio University student with certification in multi-engine aircraft. On occasion, a student with certification in another aircraft type may be in the cockpit performing functions according to their other certifications, e.g., instrument reading. The faculty/staff captain will be the only pilot. No flight training takes place with passengers on board.
Why are there students in the cockpit?
To work in many aviation roles after graduation, our students need to accrue as many as 1,500 hours in flight as pilot-in-command. Participating in these flights helps them get there. In addition, the aircraft used is unique for collegiate flight training. We're giving our students greater experience in a plane they'd be flying once employed, as well as how to work within the system of Air Traffic Control and commercial aviation.
