Mei Wei

Mei Wei (pronounced “May Way”) was the 15th dean of the Ohio University’s Russ College of Engineering and Technology. She joined OHIO from the University of Connecticut, where she served as the School of Engineering’s Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education since 2013.
A full professor in both the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, she held the school’s Centennial Term Professorship in honor of exceptional impact on teaching, leadership, academic achievement, and continued excellence. Wei also served as Director of UConn’s General Electric Center of Excellence in Advanced Materials and Modeling since 2013 and founding director of the Master’s of Engineering in Global Entrepreneurship Program since 2018.
She previously served as a visiting professor with the Department of Reconstructive Sciences in the School of Dental Medicine at UConn Health, a branch of UConn, and an Interim Department Head of UConn Mechanical Engineering.
In her research, which focuses on bone tissue engineering using novel biomaterials, Wei supervises students, and works closely with collaborators and industry partners from multiple backgrounds, including biology, materials science, mechanical engineering, pharmacy, and polymer science. Wei has won numerous honors for her continued work with bioresorbable bone fixation composites, biomimetic coatings, tissue engineering scaffolds, and nanoworm-based cancer treatment. She is a co-founder and Chief Scientist for OrteoPoniX LLC, a biomedical device company that focuses on biomaterial development for bone and cartilage repair and regeneration.
The daughter of materials science and engineering professors, Wei pursued her love of the subject early on and earned her Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia. She completed postdoctoral research fellowships with the Centre for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering at Queensland University of Technology in Australia, and with the Division of Materials Engineering at Kyoto University in Japan.
