Teacher Education Majors: Information on OEA Test & Virtual Clinical Experiences

Greetings Teacher Candidates,

I hope this finds you well. I know you have many questions during these uncertain times, but I wanted to reach out to provide you with an update regarding your clinical experiences this semester…

Firstly, if you have not read my communication regarding clinical practice and the temporarily revised guidelines, please refer to it here

Secondly, due to the announcement of Pearson closing all testing locations, the Ohio Assessment of Educators (OEA) test will be waived as a graduation requirement for the Spring 2020 Semester. This applies to all students who will be graduating in the Spring 2020 Semester, but it does not apply to future semester graduations. Though this requirement is being waived for graduation, it may still be required for teacher licensure. Any information regarding OAE and flexibility for licensure requirements will come from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) and/or the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). If we receive information about flexibility, we will forward that information on to you.

Additionally, recognizing the uncertainty of these times, we have decided that all Patton College Teacher Candidates engaged in clinical experiences should NOT return to schools in the event that they re-open at a later point in time. However, if you have the opportunity to do so, we strongly encourage you to continue to be actively involved by providing supports to your mentor teacher and students through virtual means. 

Your involvement can include, but is not limited to: 

  • teaching through live or recorded videos (teaching virtually)
  • assisting in developing lesson plans and rubrics
  • selecting and implementing instructional strategies 
  • teaching lessons and content
  • assessing learning to evaluate student progress and inform instructional decisions 
  • creating a supportive learning environment
  • managing the classroom effectively 
  • and other innovative and appropriate activities

Having an opportunity to be involved in these activities will help you to develop skills vital to your teacher preparation while still supporting P-12 student learning. We recognize that not everyone will have this opportunity, but if you do, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of it. Your Patton College faculty and your mentor teachers continue to be your best resources and sources of support for these activities, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them.

The Patton College’s nationally recognized Clinical Model of Preparation was designed to prepare you to be excellent educators and provide you with experience in the field earlier and more frequently than most Teacher Education programs in the state. Continuing to impact your students’ learning will not only help you to be part of the educational mission of meeting your students’ needs, it will make you more marketable as you seek employment opportunities in the future. We are confident that despite the ever-changing landscape of education and the current limitations to on-site clinical experiences, you are prepared to be leaders in the field.
