Claire Ramsey, an educational administration doctoral candidate specializing in comparative and international educational leadership, is the first OHIO student to receive a grant to travel to Finland through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. She will research perceived sociocultural influences on rural teachers’ curriculum and student worldview.

A native of Bridgeport, W.Va., Ramsey received both her master’s in secondary education and bachelor’s in English from West Virginia University. She chose The Patton College’s educational leadership program because she was looking for a doctoral program that had a degree or specialization in comparative and international educational leadership. She expects to graduate in May 2022, and then plans to conduct comparative, international educational research to understand and supplement public education systems in the 13-state Appalachian region of the U.S.

In addition to her studies, Ramsey worked as an Office of Multicultural Student Access and Retention (OMSAR) undergraduate advisor and Commuter and Appalachian Network (CAN) program developer/facilitator. She is also completing supplemental licensure programs, and she has been active in the English as a Second Language communities.

Previously, she taught 11th- and 12th-grade English and was the Library Media Specialist at Monongalia County Technical Education Center. She is proficient in educational technology, curriculum design, classroom management, learning styles, classroom research, assessment, and project-based learning.

As a Fulbright Scholar, Ramsey will conduct her research in Finland from mid-August until early June.

About receiving the Fulbright award, Ramsey said, “I am overjoyed and grateful for the opportunity. I am honored and humbled to have had the support of Dr. Chris Lewis and others with the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, Dr. Jean-Francois, and so many family members, friends, colleagues, and co-workers. I am certainly looking forward to this new adventure.”
