Publication Procedures

The Communication and Marketing Office creates or assists in creating printed materials—postcards, flyers, posters, brochures, and other promotional items—for The Patton College offices and departments. If a print project is intended for an off-campus audience, it must at least be approved by the communication and design office. Contact me via email (barlagk@ohio.edu).

We will assist with work for the campus audience as time permits, and please do ask for help if you want it.

How long will it take?

Be prepared to submit all of your text and artwork at least one month before you need your project completed. All text must be approved by the department chair prior to submission to communications and design. Simple projects may take much less time, and may be finished earlier, but if our office has a lengthy queue of projects, we may not be able to handle yours immediately.

If you are doing an entirely new project, give us a heads-up (barlagk@ohio.edu or 593-9586) as soon as you decide to do the project, and we will work out a deadline schedule with you.

Remember, errors will be reduced when we—and you—have sufficient time for editing and proofing.

When we have your Print/Video Work Request Form, along with all of your text and artwork, we can begin work on your project.

How much will it cost?

Departments will be charged $40/hour for design work. Departments are also responsible for the cost of printing. The cost of design work and printing will be charged through an internal transfer from your department to the communications and design department.

Once your project is completed, the communications and design office will contact you with the total number of hours for design work and a printing quote. You will then fill out the "Journal Entry Form" to submit for internal transfer of funds.

What should the project include?

To conceptualize the piece, answer these questions:

  • What are you trying to accomplish with your project?
  • Who is your intended audience?
  • Do you have existing photos and/or graphics to include in the project? If you wish to schedule new photography, refer to the Photography Request Form.
  • What is your ideal budget and/or quantity for the project?

Submit your work request

Once you've done some thinking about your project, contact the Communication and Design office by filling out the Print/Video Work Request Form. This step is essential.

Filling out this form sends the requested information to the publications office and enters your project into the communications and design project database, which helps office personnel assign your project to the appropriate person and enables them to better keep track of your project.

Once you've filled out the Print/Video Work Request Form and your project has been assigned, a communications staff member will contact you to begin work on your project.
