Dear Students of The Patton College of Education,Calledtolead logo

Welcome to the 2018-19 academic year! I hope that you had a wonderful, relaxing summer with friends and family and are ready for a positive and productive start to the fall semester. And please join me in welcoming the newest members of The Patton College—the class of 2022!

I am excited that you are here at The Patton College and focusing on your education and future success. Our programs in teacher education, retail merchandising, hospitality, and recreation studies will challenge you and prepare you for life after graduation. And, our faculty and staff are readily accessible and here to help you succeed.

Last year, with your input, we began the process of developing a new strategic plan, and this year we will finalize the plan and present it to the College. With that in mind, our theme this year is Continuing The Patton College Roadmap: Building, Sharing, Inspiring, Leading! Whether you are new to The Patton College or entering your final year or semester, you are a valued member of our College and the OHIO community. Your work will help shape our present and future, and I encourage you to participate, contribute, and lead.

It is with deep sadness that I need to inform you of the passing of one of our Teacher Education professors, Dr. Ginger Weade. She was a kind, caring instructor dedicated to her students and the teaching profession. She served The Patton College for nearly 20 years. Upon her retirement this May, she was named Professor Emeritus. Shortly after, she passed away on June 30. She is greatly missed, and we will always be grateful for her contributions to the College.

Looking ahead, there are some important dates to note for the upcoming semester:

The Patton College will be holding a Student Organization Fair this September in McCracken. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your organization and recruit new members to it. Details forthcoming. If you wish to have a table for your organization, contact Student Affairs.

Please join me for Dinner with the Dean on Oct. 23 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in McCracken 104. I look forward to sharing a meal with you while learning about your successes and insights about The Patton College.

You are also invited to The Advocacy and Leadership Summit, which will be held Oct. 11 in Jefferson Hall Room 160 from 5-8 p.m. This FREE event, organized by students for us all, will help you discover and understand how to impact your professional community through advocacy on issues important to you. I strongly encourage you to attend this workshop.

Finally, our PCOE Homecoming Tailgate will be Oct. 20 at Pepsi Tailgreat Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please come out and enjoy fall, food, family, friends, and football!

I hope to see or meet you at some point in the coming months!

I also encourage you to become as involved as possible on campus. We have many academic and social organizations both inside and outside of the College that may interest you, and these are wonderful ways to meet people, establish friendships, and incorporate the College’s core values of leadership and diversity in your daily life.

The Patton College is CALLED to LEAD. We are preparing you to be Change Agents who are Lifelong Learners committed to Embracing Diversity and LEADership. Thus, I encourage you to lead by example in the year ahead. When you do that, you make us great.

If you have not done so already, please “Like” us on Facebook and “follow” us on Pinterest and Twitter @OUPattonCollege to get updates about news and events from around The Patton College. Also, please subscribe to our YouTube Channel at OhioPattonCollege. I have no doubt that you will achieve great things this academic year, and I look forward to hearing about and recognizing all of your accomplishments in the coming weeks and months. Your work does not go unnoticed, and I am very proud of the work you do.

Please share your successes—big or small—with our marketing and communications department, so we can share them on social media, on our Student Success Stories web page, and through the new Merit Pages you will be hearing about soon. Email with your successes. Don’t be shy, brag on!

Let’s be OHIO Proud & Patton Proud and continue to achieve great things!
