Andrew Byrne

Dr. Byrne holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and History from Grove City College in Pennsylvania. He earned his master's degrees in Substance Abuse / Clinical Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling from East Carolina University in North Carolina. He also earned a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counseling and Administration with a concentration in addictions and counselor education from East Carolina University.


Dr. Byrne has served in state vocational rehabilitation agencies in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, as well as inpatient and outpatient clinical mental health and addiction counseling in both states as well. Dr. Byrne is interested in how technology and gamification impact disability, addiction, mental health, ethics, and counselor education. His doctoral dissertation surveyed over 5000 respondents on addiction to Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). He has published and presented on his research interests in peer-reviewed regional and national publications and conferences. Dr. Byrne served recently as president of the North Carolina Rehabilitation Counseling Association (2010-2012), and was the induction ceremony speaker for East Carolina University's Rho-Omega chapter of Chi Sigma Iota counseling honorary society (2013). Prior to joining the faculty at Ohio University, Dr. Byrne taught counselor education, rehabilitation, and addiction courses at East Carolina University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
