MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE (OCEMS)
Welcome to the OHIO Center for Equity in Mathematics and Science website. OCEMS is committed to strengthening collaboration, coordination, and communication among Patton College of Education faculty, OU faculty in other colleges, PreK-16 educators and administrators in the SouthEast Ohio region and beyond, and other important stakeholders including faculty at other institutions. This work supports the Patton College of Education and Ohio University missions.
Dr. Koestler, the director, brings expertise and focus on issues of diversity, equity, and justice in teaching and teacher education, in early childhood education, elementary education, teacher education, and mathematics education. Dr. Koestler is a former K-8 public school teacher and has taught in culturally, linguistically, economically diverse schools located in rural, suburban, and urban communities. Dr. Koestler had been both a classroom teacher (grades 2, 4, 5, and 8) and has also worked as a mathematics coach. For the past decade Dr. Koestler has been a university-based teacher educator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Arizona, and now at Ohio University as Director of OCEMS.
Dr. Koestler is actively involved with mathematics education and teacher education organizations, such as the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Although new to Ohio, Dr. Koestler continues to become involved in regional and state-level work. Dr. Koestler is a Board Member of the Ohio Mathematics Education Leadership Council (OMELC), is the Southeastern District Director for the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM), and is the Advisor for the Ohio University Council of Teacher of Mathematics.

Dr. Danielle Dani is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education. Her research investigates strategies for developing teacher knowledge and skills for teaching STEM ideas and practices in place-based and culturally relevant ways. (Contact Dr. Dani at email@example.com)
Dr. Mathew Felton-Koestler is an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education. His scholarship focuses on prospective and current teachers’ views of issues of equity and social justice in mathematics and mathematical modeling. Dr. Gregory D. Foley (email@example.com) is the Morton Professor of Mathematics Education. His research interests include mathematics curriculum, inquiry-based instruction, mathematics language acquisition, and teacher professional development in statistics and modeling. Dr. Allyson Hallman-Thrasher is an assistant professor jointly appointed in the Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Mathematics. Her research focuses on how prospective mathematics teachers learn to facilitate mathematics discussions and how teacher education programs can foster such learning.
