Update on Teacher Candidacy and Advanced Standing Requirements

Hello Teacher Education majors,

Thank you for being patient and flexible as we navigate COVID-19 as a college. I’m sure many of you are concerned about the requirements surrounding Teacher Candidacy and Advanced Standing, as COVID-19 has affected the ability to secure test scores, background checks, and tuberculosis tests (Early Childhood and Elementary Education).

Teacher Candidacy & Selective Admissions Update – Spring 2020
Note: Only the Early Childhood and Elementary Education program has a selective admissions process.

  1. Test Scores
The minimum ACT, SAT, and/or Praxis Core score will be waived as a requirement for fall 2020 admission to Teacher Candidacy and Selective Admissions. In response to COVID-19, this is a one-time waiver of this requirement. Teacher candidates will need to provide evidence that they have taken one of these tests before their advising hold will be lifted for spring 2021 registration.

  2. Background Reports
Teacher candidates will be offered conditional admission if they are unable to provide a background report at the time they apply for Teacher Candidacy or Selective Admissions. Teacher candidates cannot start any clinical experiences until proof of a Background Report has been provided. Completed Background Reports must be received by the Office of Student Affairs by August 1, 2020.

  3. Early Childhood and Elementary Education Candidates ONLY - TB Test
Teacher candidates will be offered conditional admission if they are unable to provide evidence of a TB test at the time they apply for Teacher Candidacy or Selective Admissions. Teacher candidates cannot start any clinical experiences until evidence of a TB test has been provided. Evidence of a completed TB test must be received by the Office of Student Affairs by August 1, 2020.

Advanced Standing – Spring 2020

  1. Background Reports – Teacher candidates will be offered conditional admission if they are unable to provide a background report at the time they apply for Teacher Candidacy or Selective Admissions. Teacher candidates cannot start any clinical experiences until proof of a Background Report has been provided. Completed Background Reports must be received by the Office of Student Affairs by August 1, 2020.

If you have further questions, please contact your academic advisor in the Office of Student Affairs or contact your faculty advisor.
