ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
As a home to prestigious programs, the Department of Recreation and Sport Pedagogy (RSP) attracts students from Ohio, across the United States, and from around the world. The Department is committed to the creation, dissemination of theoretical and practical knowledge through its distinctive programs and professional opportunities to meet the career goals of its undergraduate and graduate students. Guided by faculty, students are challenged in the classroom and in experiential learning environments to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies needed for professional success.
The Department offers two graduate programs including Coaching Education (on-line, Athens-based, on-line Soccer Coaching) and Recreation Studies (Athens-based). It also has undergraduate programs in Physical Education/Teacher Education, Recreation Studies, and a certificate program in Ecotourism. The Department's undergraduate programs in Physical Education Teacher Education and Recreation Studies successfully achieved national reaccreditation from CAEP/NASPE (2011) and COAPRT (2015). The Outdoor Recreation and Education field-based courses earned national reaccreditation from WEA in 2013.
The Department of Recreation and Sport Pedagogy at Ohio University will be internationally recognized for developing diverse leaders who teach and inspire best practices in our professions.
The department's mission is to improve wellbeing through physical activity, recreation and sport.This mission is achieved through quality academic coursework, experiential learning, scholarship and service to the university, community and related professions.
