Hoops for HoHo 2013
October 04, 2018 : Home Savings to sponsor Community Hoop Fest ‘18

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The leaves are starting to fall, signaling that basketball season is just around the corner.  To get the ball rolling, Home Savings and Ohio University Eastern are teaming up to offer Community Hoop Fest ’18 for area basketball enthusiasts of all ages.

Community Hoop Fest 2018 thumbnailThe one-day event will take place at the beautiful Health and Physical Education Center on the campus of Ohio University Eastern on Saturday, October 27.  The activities will begin with a K - 6th grade Youth Clinic from 9am – 10:30pm, followed by a 3 on 3 Tournament at 11am.

Home Savings Executive Director of Wealth Management Denise Penz said, “Home Savings is delighted to sponsor this fun community event. We have a vested interest in the youth across all the markets we serve to ensure our communities remain viable in the future.  Our partnership with OHIO Eastern allows us to stay close to our community mission and our youth focus,  she said.“

The K – 6 Youth Clinic will focus on dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense, and more in an active upbeat setting.  Ohio University Eastern Athletics Director E. J. Schodzinski will direct the clinic with help from Men’s Basketball Coach Joel Nau, Women’s Coach Chace Smith, as well as members of the men’s and women’s teams at OHIO Eastern.  The cost to attend the clinic is $10 or a donation of a winter coat to help the community.

“I am really looking forward to the clinic,” said Schodzinski.  “It is a great opportunity to welcome families to our campus, encourage youngsters in the game of basketball, and introduce the members of our teams to the community.”

The 3-on-3 Tourney will follow the clinic and feature eight divisions.  Boys and girls champions will be crowned in 5/6 grade, 7/8 grade, and high school divisions.  There will also be separate men’s and women’s adult divisions for those 18-years-old and up.  The cost for the 3-on-3 tournament is $30 for teams registering in advance and $40 for teams registering at the door.

Teams are encouraged to register quickly as each division will be limited to ten teams.  Individuals and teams are also permitted to sign up for more than one division.  For example, a high school player could sign up for both the high school and adult divisions.

“3-on-3 is a wonderful game for people of all ages,” said Schodzinski.  “It is growing in popularity because it is fast paced and there is plenty of open space on the court.  It also provides players with more opportunities to handle the ball, shoot, pass, and rebound.  Most importantly, it is fun.”

According to Schodzinski, USA Basketball has also been pushing 3-on-3 in part because in 2020 it’s going to be an official sport at the Olympics in Tokyo.  The Jr. NBA has even started youth 3-on-3 basketball leagues around the country that culminate with a national championship.

“This is going to be an exciting event,” Schodzinski said.  “I am expecting each bracket to fill up quickly and to see many old friends.  Several of our alums have already committed to participate in the adult division while their children are playing in the grade school and high school divisions.”

Schodzinski concluded, “I am most thankful to Home Savings for making this event possible for our community.  We are looking forward to working together to grow the Community Hoop Fest into an annual Ohio Valley tradition.”
