Ohio University Eastern Addresses Community Concerns Regarding Campus Operations

(St. Clairsville, OH) Officials with Ohio University Eastern are addressing concerns about campus operations and plans for the Health and Physical Education Center. The clarification is in response to community questions about the campus and the upcoming academic year.

Warren Galbreath, interim dean of the Eastern campus, said faculty and staff are actively working with students to prepare for the upcoming Fall 2020 semester. “Our student services team is working to assist students with scheduling for fall, and we continue on-going response planning regarding COVID-19 pandemic to ensure best health and safety practices,” Galbreath said.  New programming, including a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree, are being offered at Eastern this academic year, Galbreath said. “We look forward to serving our new and returning students.”

Last week, OHIO Regional Higher Education announced that intercollegiate athletics activities as part of the Ohio Regional Campus Conference would no longer be offered at Eastern or any of the regional campuses. Nicole Pennington, executive dean for OHIO RHE, said discussions about ceasing to offer athletics were underway prior to the pandemic. “These discussions were accelerated by COVID-19 and unfortunately, we do not have the resources to be able to implement the safeguards required for safe competitive sports on our regional campuses this fall,” Pennington said.  Plans call for resuming athletic programming through club or intramural opportunities once it is safe for us to do so, she said.

Concerns about the sale of HAPEC are unfounded, Pennington said. “There is no intent to sell the facility at this time,” she said. “We are following the state's guidance in keeping non-critical facilities closed during the pandemic.”

All campus facilities, including conference rooms, event spaces, and other non-traditional learning spaces are being considered as the University works to provide socially distanced learning environments for students and faculty.
