LGBT Center offering free student transition seminar on LGBTQ+ resources and identities

Ohio University actively welcomes and celebrates difference in all of its forms, and there will be some new faces on campus this fall that OHIO’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center has big plans for.

The LGBT Center is offering a new seminar aimed to welcome new and transfer rainbow Bobcats to the OHIO community.

“LGBTQ Identities and Resources” is a seven-week seminar that will run from 6 to 7:20 p.m. Wednesdays from Aug. 28 through Oct. 9.

The free 0.5 credit seminar will be led by interim director of OHIO’s LGBT Center, Micah McCarey and Assistant Director Dr. Jan Huebenthal.

McCarey and Dr. Huebenthal will inform students on campus resources that will support LGBT student success; talk about combining academic success with personal well-being and a sense of belonging; discuss gender identity, sexuality, queerness, intersectionality and privilege; and offer tips on developing friendship and community at Ohio University.

Dr. Huebenthal said the seminar is a wonderful opportunity to acquaint incoming LGBTQ+ students with the wealth of resources and support networks that OHIO has to offer.

“Our campus community is fiercely dedicated to the daily work of inclusion and this class represents one more piece of that shared commitment,” Dr. Huebenthal added. “We believe that it truly takes a village to be a successful college student and it's a pleasure to showcase our OHIO village. For new students who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, it is empowering to learn about the histories of that community and what makes us so strong, resilient and beautiful — today, together and at this university."

For more information and to sign up for UC 1500: Student Transition Seminar, email Dr. Huebenthal at huebenthal@ohio.edu. All UC 1500 courses are part of a general full course load, and students enrolled in these classes incur no additional charges.
