OHIO Air Force ROTC cadets teach West Elementary sixth graders history of U.S. flag

On Sept. 14, 2018, cadets from Air Force ROTC Detachment 650 at Ohio University traveled to Athens West Elementary School for a presentation of a United States flag.

Cadets Danielle Valaitis, Segarra Ibanez, and Mihai Untea met with the sixth-grade students to discuss the history and significance of the flag. Because the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks had occurred a few days prior, it was good timing. The young students grew to understand how a great tragedy can not only inspire a love for one’s country, but how it can also bring citizens together.

First, the cadets discussed the evolution of the flag throughout the centuries, along with the symbolism tied to each aspect of the flag. The cadets briefed the sixth graders on how the flag was a marker for soldiers in battle in case they got lost and how the flag is a symbol of unity for the people of its country.

Even in times of crisis, the flag stands for hope for the future. Part of what comes with the knowledge of history and symbolism is the utmost respect for the flag. The sixth graders learned about saluting, putting your hand over your heart, displaying and folding the flag. Lastly, the cadets briefly touched on properly retiring the flag.

Cadet Valaitis spoke highly of her experience at the elementary school.

“It was amazing how interactive the sixth graders were. They were always raising their hands to ask questions and give input, even if it was incorrect,” she said. “They were all eager to learn more about their country.”

One moment that touched Valaitis a great deal was when a little girl came up to her after the presentation and asked to show her how to salute.

Cadet Untea also gave great input on his experience with the event.

He said, “It was a great experience going out in the community and getting to interact with and teach the importance of our national flag.” He added that the kids asked great questions and shared their future goals.

The West Elementary teachers were very pleased with the presentation and asked the Air Force ROTC cadets to return to the school on another occasion. The presentation gave the sixth graders an opportunity to be outside for class and a chance to engage with the cadets.

Detachment 650 looks forward to an ongoing relationship with Athens’ elementary schools.
