Two nursing faculty members at Ohio University Southern presented at joint nursing and patient safety conference last week in New York. Associate Professors Elizabeth Delaney, R.N., and Mashawna Hamilton, R.N. shared presentations at the 29th annual International Conference on Family Nursing & Health Care, a joint event with the 3rd World Congress on Patient Safety and Nursing Healthcare.

Delaney and Hamilton co-presented on the topic of “Providing Mindfulness Activities for Nursing Students in the Classroom.” The session demonstrated brief strategies faculty may implement to support nursing students mind and body learning experiences.

Hamilton also presented a session on “Student Nurses Learning to Health through Horses: Caring for Diverse Populations in the Community through an Innovative Clinical Experience.” The session focused on the collaborative learning experiences offered to Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at Ohio Southern through a collaboration with the Center for Therapeutic Riding at the university’s Ohio Horse Park located in Franklin Furnace, Ohio. 

Delaney presented a session as well, entitled “The Return of Study Hall: The Influence of Teacher/Student Interaction Outside the Classroom Contributes to Academic Success. Delaney shared strategies for supporting student nurses outside the traditional classroom through learner directed activities, development of interpersonal skills and opportunities for reflection.

The theme of the conference convening was: Explore Opportunities, Best Practices & Recent Developments in Family Nursing. The conference was held at the Hilton New York JFK Airport Hotel in New York City, Oct. 19-20.
