OHIO’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism ranked as one of best journalism programs for aspiring editors

Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism was named the fourth best journalism program in the country for aspiring editors by College Magazine. In picking the best programs for aspiring journalists to attend, College Magazine took into consideration the highest ranked programs, extracurricular activities that allow for real-world work and faculty involvement.

When ranking the program as one of the top in the nation, the magazine noted that the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism has one of the most selective, challenging journalism programs in the nation, expecting incoming students to rank in the top 10 percent of their class and maintain a 3.6 GPA or higher.

The magazine also emphasized the various student publications on campus, such as Backdrop Magazine, Her Campus, Fangle Magazine and The Post, that allow students to hone in on their editing skills and actively participate from beginning to end in creating a publication. They acknowledged how many of these publications have also won awards, like The Post receiving an award for Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper in 2017 from the Society of Professional Journalists.

“Our students benefit from having a wide variety of student media to edit and manage, which gives them tremendous experiential learning opportunities,” said Director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Dr. Robert Stewart.

The ranking also included how alumni of this program go on to edit for prestigious publications, such as The Washington PostThe Wall Street Journal and TIME. Not only is the program producing the caliber of students to obtain internships and jobs at these outlets, but continues to engage current students with these notable alumni in order to learn more and gain valuable connections.

OHIO’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, a council that hand selects schools who achieve excellence and high standards in professional education in journalism.
