OHIO Libraries to Host #WeAreAppalachia Celebration

A series of events exploring diverse Appalachian identities

Ohio University Libraries will host a series of events for #WeAreAppalachia, a daylong celebration on the diversity of the Appalachian region beginning with Crystal Wilkinson, award-winning author and associate professor of English at the University of Kentucky, who will speak at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28 on the fourth floor of Alden Library.

The series of events will showcase the many ways stereotypes have been miscast in an increasingly diverse region that runs counter to the narratives shared about the region, especially in the wake of the 2016 election.

Tiffany Arnold, lecturer in the College of Health Sciences and Professions who also leads the Appalachian Studies Certificate program, hopes that the event will foster regional pride for attendees, and that “by exploring the vast diversity and research that is happening here, we can gain a new perspective for the place that we live.”

The March 28 celebration comes after a recent campus showing of “Coal Black Voices,” a documentary about Affrilachian poets. All of the #WeAreAppalachia events are free and open to the public.
