Ohio University shared the following message with all students, faculty and staff regarding approaching winter weather on Jan. 29, 2019.
Dear Students and Colleagues,
The National Weather Service is forecasting extremely cold weather in our region beginning today, Jan. 29, 2019, into Thursday, Jan. 31, with very cold temperatures anticipated. We are writing to share some important information that will keep you safe and warm as these unseasonably cold temperatures approach.
As a general rule, when weather conditions pose a significant threat to the safety of students on campus, the decision to cancel classes or close the University is made by the President and Provost. Upon their decision, classes may be cancelled or the University may be closed entirely, which will be announced with as much advance notice as possible to allow time for planning. In the event of class cancellation, the University will remain open and employees, including student employees, are to report to work as usual. Generally speaking, the University will not close unless road conditions become impassable, such as in the event of a Level 3 snow emergency.
Faculty are encouraged to engage in advance planning in preparation for the potential of cancelled classes. Faculty may require students to complete alternative assignments via Blackboard or other modified coursework in lieu of regular attendance. In the event that classes are cancelled or if the University closes due to inclement weather, students will not report to regularly scheduled classes or instructional laboratory activities.
Please note: Employees who do not feel it is safe to travel to their Campus should follow normal call-off procedures or contact their supervisor. Student workers are generally required to report to work as scheduled. In the event the student does not feel it is safe to travel to their work site, they must notify their supervisor. Ohio University Transportation will continue to operate as usual.
If classes are cancelled due to severe weather or other exceptional situations, an official announcement will be sent via emergency text and email to everyone signed up to receive the notifications. OHIO’s Alert page, www.ohio.edu/alert, will also be updated as necessary. If you are uncertain about the status of an event planned on your campus, please contact the event organizer(s) directly.
