Applications open for presenters at 2019 Spotlight on Learning Conference

Applications to present at the 2019 Spotlight on Learning Conference are being accepted until February 10. This all-day event will showcase best practices from across the University community in concurrent sessions centered around the theme “Experiential Learning.” All OHIO faculty and staff are invited to attend and participate. The conference will be held in Baker University Center on Tuesday, April 30, and is co-sponsored by the Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Committee and the Office of Instructional Innovation.

“This year’s conference theme was inspired by President Nellis’s Strategic Pathway of ‘Building a University Engagement Ecosystem,’” said Tim Vickers, director of the Center for Teaching & Learning. “Experiential learning is a type of High-Impact Practice—practices that are documented to increase rates of student retention and student engagement.”

Possible session topics could include developing, starting, and assessing an experiential learning project; successes and challenges; as well as exploring innovative ways to bring the real world into formal learning environments.

“Experiential learning affords both faculty and students exciting opportunities for deeply engaging material, using a wide array of liberal arts skills, and addressing real-world issues in meaningful ways,” said Scott Titsworth, dean of the Scripps College of Communication. “Ohio University has already developed substantial examples of experiential learning approaches in classes and across programs. By focusing on this topic for the conference, we can both share these examples broadly with faculty, staff and students, and can also highlight this teaching and learning approach as a defining characteristic of our pedagogical philosophy as a university committed to outstanding learning opportunities for students.”

If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please fill out the application form by February 10. For additional information, visit the event web page, or email the Office of Instructional Innovation at oii@ohio.edu.
