Instructional Innovation, Globalizing the Curriculum at OHIO event slated for Nov. 15

Instructional Innovation and Globalizing the Curriculum at Ohio University will be the focus of a special event on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

The event, which will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Baker University Center Multicultural Center Multipurpose Room, will be part of OHIO’s International Education Week 2017 celebration. The afternoon will serve as a showcase for innovative teaching methods being used in OHIO classrooms, especially in relation to teaching with a global perspective, and will include a keynote speech, panel discussion and other activities.

The information shared at the forum is designed to benefit OHIO faculty members of all experience levels, as well as students who are working toward becoming teachers.

The goal of the forum is to raise the profile of existing models of instructional innovation, either through diversity management in the classroom or by utilizing technology. OHIO faculty and staff at the event will show examples of the work they have done to globalized the curriculum on all of the University’s campuses, and the participants will be invited to ask questions and share their own experiences in instructional innovation.

Professor Linda Rice, co-principal investigator of the Academic Innovation Accelerator and chair of the English Department, will provide the keynote address for the event.

After the keynote address, a presentation on “OHIO Models: Teaching with a Global Perspective” will be led by:

  • Dawn Bikowski, director of the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP)
  • Talinn Phillips, associate professor of English
  • Sheida Shirvani, professor of communication on the Zanesville Campus and a 2017-18 facilitator for the OHIO Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program

The panel discussion will focus on “Lessons Learned” and will feature:

  • Joshua Hill, assistant professor of history
  • Andrew Pueschel, lecturer of management
  • Jodie Foster, associate lecturer of biological sciences
  • Purba Das, associate professor of communication studies and campus program liaison for the Southern Campus
  • Pamela Kaylor, associate lecturer of communication on the Lancaster Campus
  • Gabriela Popa, associate professor of physics on the Zanesville Campus

The forum will also include remarks from William Willan, executive dean of regional higher education, and Lorna Jean Edmonds, vice provost for global affairs and international studies.
