It was 60 years ago that Ohio University Eastern Campus opened its doors to its first students.
In the fall of 1957 OHIO Eastern answered the call to provide continuing education to World War II veterans.
OUE was originally located in Martins Ferry High School in the City of Martins Ferry.
In 1967, it was moved to its current campus in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Today, it continues to provide an affordable, high-quality education to the residents of the Upper Ohio Valley.
The Eastern Campus serves more than 1,100 students from the Belmont, Harrison, Monroe and Jefferson counties in Ohio, as well as Marshall and Ohio counties in West Virginia.
Ohio University Eastern, along with the OHIO Alumni Association, invite alumni, friends and the community to celebrate its milestone anniversary at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the at River City Restaurant, 1400 Main St., Wheeling, West Virginia.
OUE Director of External Relations E.J. Schodzinski said this event would not be possible without support from the community.
"We are thrilled with the community support for our 60th Anniversary Gala. We have a dozen major sponsors and anticipate a crowd in excess of 300, which will include alumni, donors and community leaders,” Schodzinski said.
Besides marking a milestone, the gala also benefits scholarship. All proceeds from the gala will go towards the 60th Anniversary Scholarship fund, which benefits Ohio University Eastern students.
“Our Community Development Board initially set a goal to raise $60,000 in scholarships in honor of our 60th Anniversary,” Schodzinski said. “I am happy to report that we have far exceeded that goal and expect to make an announcement approaching $300,000 at the Gala.”
The Gala will begin at 6 p.m. with a social reception and silent auction, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. A short program follows dinner. It will include testimonials from alumni who attended the Eastern Campus and the announcement of several new scholarship endowments.
The evening also features the Sarah Hays Band, fronted by Sarah Mahan-Hays, associate professor of communication at the Eastern Campus.
