Faculty newsmakers to be celebrated at Oct. 12 gala

A record-breaking 373 Ohio University faculty members who were featured in the media in 2016 will be honored at the third annual Faculty Newsmakers Gala, which will take place Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Baker University Center Ballroom on the Athens Campus.

Hosted by University Communications and Marketing in partnership with the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Faculty Newsmakers Gala recognizes OHIO faculty newsmakers who made headlines during the previous calendar year. The event serves as a means of honoring all of OHIO’s faculty newsmakers and a forum to bestow special recognition on a select few newsmakers – those who earned the 10 most media placements in the previous calendar year and those who were quoted in media reports related to the Associated Press’ top 10 stories of the previous calendar year. Those individuals are presented custom-made Keystroke Catalyst Awards, underscoring the wide-ranging impact a single person can have on enriching others across the region or around the world.

“This year’s record-breaking number of newsmakers is astounding and a testament to the strong partnerships UCM has developed with faculty members and communications professionals in their respective colleges and units to elevate OHIO and showcase the University’s excellence by highlighting the expertise and research of our faculty through the media,” said Chief Marketing Officer Renea Morris. “I am excited to see OHIO’s national and international profile grow each year due to faculty who are committed to sharing their stories. We look forward to honoring all of our newsmakers at this year’s gala.”

The recently launched OHIO Faculty Newsmakers webpage features information about the event, the Keystroke Catalyst Award and past honorees.

OHIO’s faculty newsmakers serve as expert sources for media outlets, offering professional opinions on breaking news, providing information on complicated subject matters, and educating readers, viewers and listeners on topics that shape our cultural dialogue and form our collective history. In doing so, these individuals are making news for all of OHIO, drawing attention to the expertise of our faculty, to our stellar research efforts, and to the innovative ways Ohio University educates and engages its students.

Defined as employees who, regardless of their title or classification, teach at Ohio University and have been included in media placement reports provided by Cision, OHIO faculty newsmakers include tenured and non-tenured faculty, as well as administrators who serve as educators in the University’s classrooms. Many of OHIO’s faculty newsmakers participate in UCM’s Experts Directory, a searchable database that allows members of the media to find and connect with the numerous newsmakers considered outstanding leaders and top experts in their fields.
