CLDC event caters to students interested in careers in government

For Ohio University students interested in pursuing a career in government, the Career and Leadership Development Center is hosting its second annual Government Jobs Spotlight from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in Baker University Center 503.

Designed to expose OHIO students to the breadth of job opportunities in the field of government and public service, the event will include opportunities to meet and network with government employers, including Ohio University alumni. In addition, students attending will hear from and be able to ask questions of a panel that will include:

  • Ralph Harvey, a captain at the Athens Police Department
  • Danny Livengood, a recruiter from the United States Peace Corps
  • Kelsey Scott, an economic development specialist for the City of Delaware, Ohio

“We, as an office, are responsible for not only connecting students with employers and with recruiting opportunities, but also educating them about their options,” said Erika Peyton, assistant director for employer relations and marketing at the CLDC.  “We know that a big part of the career development process is not only learning about yourself, but also learning about what your options are, and so these panel events help to expand one’s understanding.”

Peyton noted the benefits of attending the Government Jobs Spotlight, including gaining an understanding of the different levels of government and their roles. For example, students interested in permanent employment with the federal government are likely to hear that Peace Corps service gives them priority as candidates for jobs with other federal agencies.

The Government Jobs Spotlight is just one of five industry-focused job spotlights the CLDC will be hosting this year. (See sidebar for additional events.)

“Since we serve all students, we wanted to focus on industries that students from all over the University could potentially go into,” Peyton said.

The Government Jobs Spotlight, and all of the CLDC’s events, are free and open to all Ohio University students. Registration is not required, but appreciated. Students can indicate their intention to attend through the Facebook events on the CLDC Facebook page. Formal dress is not required, but students are encouraged to dress professionally.
