Come ‘Back on the Bricks’ for Homecoming 2017

Homecoming week is packed with fun events for OHIO alumni and friends

Homecoming is here! It’s time to celebrate the best home away from home — Ohio University. Come join family, friends and fellow Bobcats for a week of Homecoming.

This year’s Homecoming theme, “Back in the Mix, Back on the Bricks,” honors the School of Music’s 100th anniversary and the Marching 110’s 50th anniversary. It is also a nod to memories of the many DJs and musicians who found their way through Athens’ bricks.

The weeklong celebration begins Oct. 2 and concludes with the big football game Oct. 7, when OHIO takes on Central Michigan.

"Homecoming is the best time of year! We can't wait to welcome all Bobcats, past, present and even future, to Athens for a fun weekend,” OHIO Alumni Association Senior Director of External Relations Dawn Werry said.

The party starts on Monday with the Paint the Town Green decorating contest. The Student Alumni Board and Campus Involvement Center partner with local businesses and University departments to put on a fierce Bobcat spirit competition. Register your organization or company to be part of this fun, creative tradition.

Wednesday brings the Student Alumni Board’s Pack the Pantry event. Sorority and Fraternity Life co-hosts the canned food drive that benefits the Athens County Food Pantry. Last year, more than 4,000 cans were collected. Can collection begins at 11 a.m. at Konneker Alumni Center, 52 University Terrace.

“We are super excited about doing Pack the Pantry again this year. This event is very helpful to the pantries, especially since the holiday season is right around the corner,” Student Alumni Board Vice President of Philanthropy Libby Gayer said.

Bring your Bobcat pride to one of the best-attended Homecoming events. The Yell Like Hell Pep Rally begins with a pre-party on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Baker University Center parking lot. The pre-party spotlights more than 15 student organizations that represent the OHIO experience and includes food and games.

“We feel that each organization or office brings something special to this community and wanted an opportunity to represent that,” said Association Campus Relations Intern Tracy Kondrit.

The pep rally then begins at 8:30 p.m. President M. Duane Nellis, the OHIO football team, the Marching 110 and many others will attend. Get loud and proud, and make it on down.

Friday is your opportunity to fill your day with nostalgia. Campus tours begin at 2 p.m. at Konneker Alumni Center. Come see what is new on campus since you left.

Historical hayrides at the Ridges start at 5 p.m. Included in registration is a reusable mug and hot chocolate. Finally, visit your old residence hall at 6 p.m. Registration is also required.

Saturday, Oct. 7, is the big day! Start bright and early with Ping Recreation Center’s first Homecoming 5K and Fun Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m. Runners, walkers, strollers and pets are all welcome. You can register at Ping Recreation Center through the morning of the race or register online.

After the race, head to Court or Union Streets for the Homecoming parade, stepping off at 10 a.m. This year, the parade will feature our Cheermeister Spirit Award Winner Sheila Winland, BSS ’98. Winland is the parade marshal and guest of honor.

“The parade is my favorite part,” Senior Assistant Director of Student Activities Brian Heilmeier said. “You get to see so many students be involved and share their true Bobcat spirit.”

The parade rolls into the Bobcat Bash at Pepsi Tailgreat Park at 11 a.m., when you’ll get a chance to mingle with a few hundred Bobcats and get pumped for the game! At 2 p.m., OHIO and Central Michigan will take the field. You can reserve your game tickets by calling 1-800-575-2287.
