OHIO’s annual Parents Weekend kicks off Sept. 15

Bobcats missing home or just eager to share their home away from home with their loved ones don’t have to wait long. Ohio University’s first Family Weekend of the year – Parents Weekend – kicks off Friday, Sept. 15, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 17.

Designed to give students a chance to share their OHIO experience with their loved ones, this year’s Parents Weekend is packed full of activities that cater to everyone. 

The Arts

Ohio University is home to many talented artists – both professional and students – and also features exhibits from artists outside of the University. Among the artworks on display during Parents Weekend are:

  • “States of Being” – On display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16 in Baker University Center’s Trisolini Gallery, this solo exhibit focused on printmaking celebrates the work of Professor Emerita Mary Manusos from OHIO’s School of Art + Design. 
  • “At First Sight: A Survey of Foundations Methods” – On display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16 in the Ohio University Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall, this School of Art + Design exhibit features multiple students’ works.
  • “Recountal” – On display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17 at The Ridges’ Kennedy Museum of Art, this exhibit celebrates 20 years of the Kennedy Museum by recounting its history of showcasing Navajo weavings from its Southwest Native American Collection. More than 40 weavings are on display.
  • Student Film Screenings – First-year students in the Film Division’s Master of Fine Arts Program will be screening their films from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept.  16 at the Athena Cinema. A celebration of initial projects from what is often called “film production boot camp,” this event is free and open to all.

Students and their loved ones can show off their Bobcat pride and OHIO spirit at the following sporting events:

  • OHIO Hockey’s Green vs. White Game – The OHIO Hockey program will be previewing this year’s team and celebrating the start of its 60th anniversary season at its annual Green vs. White (inter-squad scrimmage) Game at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at Bird Arena. This free event will also include a chance to Skate with the ’Cats. 
  • OHIO Football vs. Kansas – Head over to Peden Stadium on Sept. 16 for a noon kickoff as the Bobcats take on the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Admission is free for current students with a valid OHIO ID.

Looking to get silly, be mesmerized or laugh out loud? Check out these Parents Weekend events: 

  • “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” Sing-Along – The Athena Cinema will be showing a special screening of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16. The Knights of the Round Table scene includes captioning for a sing-along perfect for this 1975 cult classic. Tickets are required.
  • The Magic of Bill Blagg LIVE! – Dubbed the “Houdini Times Ten” by NBC, Blagg will deliver 90 minutes of interactive, action-packed magic and illusion. His performance kicks off at 8 p.m. Sept. 15 in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are required. 
  • The Second City Cure for the Common Comedy – Chicago’s legendary sketch and improv comedy theater brings 55 years of producing cutting-edge satirical revues to the Athens Campus for a performance that begins at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Note: This performance may not be appropriate for younger audience members. Tickets are required.
Outdoor Adventure

Take in the beauty and excitement of the Athens Campus and the surrounding area at these Parents Weekend events: 

  • Stargazing and Campfire at The Ridges – Enjoy an evening under the stars from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16. A $10 ticket includes transportation to and from The Ridges, guide staff and campfire snacks. Registration is required.
  • Conkle’s Hollow Day Hike – Take a hike through a picturesque part of the Hocking Hills from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17. A $20 ticket includes transportation to and from Conkle’s Hollow, guide staff and a light lunch. Registration is required.
  • Zipline Adventure – Climb a 40-foot-tall tower and soar down a zipline at Outdoor Pursuit’s zipline facility at The Ridges. Ziplining will be offered every hour beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 17. A $25 ticket includes transportation to and from The Ridges, instructions and all gear. Registration is required.
Special Events

This year’s Parents Weekend features a few unique opportunities, including:

  • Fall Parent and Family Reception – Scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Baker University Center Ballroom, this free event invites all parents and families to talk with Ohio Parent Advisory Council members, fellow Bobcat parents and Ohio University staff. Light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be provided. Registration is required by Sept. 11.
  • The Wall That Heals – A half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., “The Wall That Heals” will be on display 24 hours a day from 6 a.m. Sept. 14 through noon on Sept. 17 at OHIO’s Bicentennial Park, located at Richland Avenue and South Green Drive. The display also includes a mobile education center with exhibits designed to tell the story of the Vietnam War and the era surrounding the conflict as well as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. 
  • Introduction to Global Opportunities at OHIO – Scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 16 in the Walter International Education Center, this free event will provide students and their families with information about study abroad and away programs, scholarship opportunities, and health and safety while off campus. Light refreshments will be provided
  • Pamper Your Parents – Come to the third floor of Baker University Center from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 and learn how to make sustainable bath products and a sustainable wrapping station during this free event. Coffee and tea will be provided.

University to host three more Family Weekends this year

Parents Weekend is just the first of four Family Weekends Ohio University hosts throughout the year. The other Family Weekends are:

Moms Weekend – April 6-8
