Ohio University Southern makes learning fun for Academy students

IRONTON, Ohio – Last week marked the 37th Annual Academy of Excellence on Ohio University’s Southern Campus. Students from grades one through six became junior chefs, artists, chemists, television producers, CSI investigators and more. Participants represented several of the area’s local schools.

Two of Ayrie Staley’s children, Bindi and Bryein, participated in this year’s Academy of Excellence. Staley said that her daughter enjoyed the television production class, “Lights, Camera, Action!” the most. “Bindi really enjoyed working behind the scenes in this class. She acts in local theater, but now because of this experience she wants to be a director.”

Staley added, “I love that my children have the opportunity to participate in a program like this. They have looked forward to coming every morning and are even talking about next year.”

Gilda Kinder’s daughter, Zoe, enjoyed “Solving a Mystery – CSI.” Students in this class learned to collect fingerprints and other investigative skills. Kinder said, “Zoe likes both of her classes, but she especially enjoyed all aspects of the CSI class. In preschool, she said she wanted to be a spy and now she says she wants to be a Texas Ranger!”

The Academy concluded July 21 with the presentation of certificates and a premiere of the slideshow and video that the television production class created. Both of these are available on the Southern Campus Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ohiouniversitysouthern/.
