President Nellis meets international students and their families

Ohio University’s International Student and Faculty Services (ISFS) and the Athens Friends of International Students (AFIS) sponsored a special event for international students and their family members and friends on Wednesday, June 28.

The event, held in the Schoonover Center, provided an opportunity for international students and their family members to enjoy snacks from Restaurant Salaam while also getting to know other students, faculty, staff and area residents. Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis was the special guest for the gathering, and he spent time visiting with the students and family members. He also spoke to the group about the importance of international students in the community.

“Ohio University is a very welcoming community where our differences are celebrated,” President Nellis said. “Interactions between people from different nations and different cultures greatly enrich the college experience. I am so pleased to have such a successful group of international students at Ohio University.”

The event lasted for two hours and those in attendance were invited to walk across the street to the College Green for the evening’s Under the Elms concert series.

“We were thrilled to have so many international students attend the event, along with their family members and friends,” said ISFS Interim Director Diane Cahill. “It was a perfect opportunity to get to know students and their families and to see familiar faces. It was a fun night for everyone involved, and we hope to make this a recurrent event during our summer sessions when we can.”

“Our students were so excited to have the President stop in and talk with them during the evening,” added Vice Provost for Global Affairs and International Studies Lorna Jean Edmonds. “It is truly special to see how our University and community members reach out to our international students, faculty and staff, who add so much to our campus through their knowledge, experiences and friendship.”
