Chillicothe campus enrollment doubles for Advanced Placement Summer Institute


Ohio University Chillicothe hosted its 19th annual Advanced Placement Summer Institute July 23 – 26, 2018. Every year the Chillicothe campus offers the institute to high school teachers who teach a core subject at the Advanced Placement (AP) level, which is comparable to a college level curriculum. The AP Summer Institute introduces teaching methods, student exam expectations, and curriculum content needed by both new and experienced teachers of AP courses for high school students.

This year’s institute consisted of 70 teachers from Ohio and surrounding states, doubling in size in comparison to years past. Classes were taught in Physics, Statistics, Calculus AB, English Literature & Composition, U.S. History, World History, and U.S. Government and Politics.

Due to upcoming changes in AP U.S. Government and Politics over 30 students enrolled in the course. Dr. Clarissa Peterson, Professor of Political Science at DePauw University and instructor for AP Government at the institute remarked, “In order for students to do well in AP classes, it’s really important for teachers to enroll in an AP institute such as this one. When the curriculum changes, like it has this year, it’s next to impossible for teachers to successfully teach the class.”

For the upcoming 2018-19 academic year, the curriculum in AP U.S. Government and Politics has been redesigned to focus more on disciplinary practices, reasoning processes, and the transfer of knowledge.

Peterson continued, “It’s also important for teachers to be involved in the AP program in every way possible, especially as a reader for the exam. Being involved helps them to become better educators in the discipline.”

For the last 15 years, high schools have offered AP courses that give the highest performing students a chance to earn college credit in core courses. Courses involve research and hands on activities as well as preparing positional papers. Based on end of course tests, students can earn college credit while still meeting high school requirements.

Joyce Atwood, Program Director for the AP Summer Institute, commented, “Ohio University Chillicothe is pleased to partner with regional school districts in preparing high school teachers to better educate students with the rigor needed to be successful in both AP level courses and at the college level.”
