Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) event on Feb. 9

A special event to discuss Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) environments and how they can be expanded at Ohio University will be held on Friday, Feb. 9.

The event, which will feature a webinar presentation and a group discussion, will be held at the Yamada International House from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. The location is subject to change, though, depending on the number of people who register for the event.

The webinar will be hosted by the NAFSA: Association of International Educators. This is part of NAFSA’s Architecture for Global Learning, online professional enrichment series to help faculty, scholars, and administrators strengthen their understanding of global learning and develop capacity for delivering concrete curricular and co-curricular experiences.

COIL environments integrate global learning into the curricula of students who may be place or time-bound. COIL courses can be launched in all disciplines and facilitate interdisciplinary connections that allow students to make unique insights and deepen the global engagement of students as they link university classes in different countries. OHIO’s Regional Campuses launched a COIL initiative in the 2015-2016 academic year, and the faculty members have been very active in offering COIL courses with other COIL fellows at OHIO. The success of COIL on the Regional Campuses had led to an interest in expanding the program across the University.

The webinar will feature presentations from faculty members involved with successful COIL programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) system. These faculty members will discuss how students can become engaged in “big” problem solving with their international peers. The webinar will also explain how COIL initiatives can be implemented in different academic settings.

The Friday, Feb. 9 event will also feature discussions on expanding the program at OHIO and will explore opportunities for faculty members to get involved.

For more information or to register for the event, please visit this COIL event webpage or call the Office of Global Affairs at 740-593-1840.

Interested individuals who cannot travel to the Yamada International House on Friday Feb. 9 are also encouraged to take part in the webinar from their own computers. This registration page provides additional information.
