Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador officials visit OHIO

Leaders from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE) visited Ohio University in November to meet with faculty, staff and students, and to discuss new areas of collaboration.

OHIO and PUCE have been working together since 2000, and a delegation from OHIO traveled to Ecuador in June to attend the opening of PUCE’s new Center for Research on Health in Latin America. During that visit, OHIO faculty, staff and students met with partners at PUCE and visited collaborative programs where OHIO faculty and students are currently involved in study away experiences.

The delegation from PUCE then traveled to OHIO in November in order to take part in a wide range of events. The PUCE representatives included:

  • David Sotomayor, director of international relations
  • Rommel Montúfar, director of research and post-graduate studies
  • Verónica Yepez, associate professor in the School of Communication
  • Esteban Baus Carrera, M.A., dean of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences
  • Lilian Ortiz, dean of the School of Nursing
  • Carlos Moreano, professor of medicine
  • José Santiago Andrade-Zapata, coordinator of Ignatian Leadership Program

One highlight of their time on campus was an open forum where the PUCE representatives were able to present information on several programs at their university and discuss potential areas of collaboration. OHIO faculty and staff who have an interest in working on projects in Ecuador attended the forum and afterward had the opportunity to hold further discussions with the PUCE representatives.

The forum attracted a large number of OHIO faculty and staff, and the PUCE representatives were pleased with the opportunity to discuss new programs that could benefit students at both institutions.

Also during their time at OHIO, the PUCE representatives took part in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Visiting the Edison Biotechnology Institute
  • Taking part in meetings at the Ohio University Diabetes Institute
  • Touring the Ohio University Game Research and Immersive Design (GRID) Lab
  • Visiting local communities, including the Kids on Campus program at Trimble Elementary School
  • Touring the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Touring Ohio University’s Dublin Campus
