Four OHIO Hockey players headed to 2017 Winter World University Games

When the 2017 Winter World University Games kick off next month in Kazakhstan, hockey fans can expect to see quite a few Bobcats on the ice.

The American Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that four members of the Ohio University Hockey Team have been selected for the U.S. Men’s National University Team.

OHIO forwards Joey Breslin, a senior from Centerville, Ohio; Matthew Hartman, a senior from Shaker Heights, Ohio; and Matthew Rudin, a sophomore from Northfield, Ohio; as well as defenseman Michael LaFrenier, a junior from Addison, Illinois, will be a part of the 23-man roster for the U.S. team. They will be joined by OHIO Hockey Head Coach Sean Hogan who will be making his debut as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National University Team.

This year marks Hogan’s third year on the U.S. team, having served as an assistant coach in 2013 and 2015. It also marks Breslin’s second time on the team.

“It is an honor to have four OHIO Hockey student-athletes represented on the U.S. National University team roster,” Hogan said. “It is another indication that we are continuing to do the right things in our hockey program.”

OHIO has the most hockey players on the U.S. men’s team, which is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

The U.S. Men’s National University Team will participate in a training camp Dec. 26-29 in Boston before heading to the 2017 Winter World University Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The training camp will include three exhibition games – one against NCAA Division I College of the Holy Cross, the other two against an all-star team from the Eastern Hockey League.

The 2017 Winter World University Games kick off Jan. 29 and run through Feb. 8. The U.S. Men’s National University Team’s first bout of the competition will come Monday, Jan. 30, against Canada’s team.

One of the biggest global winter multi-sports events for student-athletes, the Winter World University Games is an international competition held every two years in different cities. More than 2,500 individuals from more than 50 countries will compete in the event, which is organized by the International University Sports Federation.
