Ohio University Eastern honors fall graduating class

Mattox encourages grads to give back

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio – Ohio University’s Eastern Campus honored 23 local graduates at the Fall Honors and Recognition Convocation Thursday evening at the campus’ theater in St. Clairsville.

Campus Dean Paul Abraham welcomed the graduates and their families. He was followed by the guest speaker, Dr. John Mattox.

“Tonight’s event represents a critical rite of passage for our students who have persevered through many hours of study, exams and paper writing to reach their goal of completing a degree,” Abraham said. “It is a momentous and hard-to-reach accomplishment, which bookmarks a critical juncture in life. Simply put, tonight marks the beginning of what comes next for our graduates.”

Dr. Mattox, an Air Force veteran who was recently inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, started his presentation with a moment of silence to honor all veterans. The founder and curator of the Underground Railroad Museum then congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to give back to others. “Take a look around and see all of the people that are here to support you,” he said. “None of us can stand alone, make sure you thank your parents and your families for their support, and follow their lead by giving back to others.”

Abraham concluded the ceremony by congratulating this year’s candidates on earning their Ohio University degrees. “I feel confident that we are sending the graduates into the world inspired to make a difference and with more courage and confidence than when they came through the doors a few short years ago. Congratulations to all of you on a job well done.”
