2016 OHIO Gingerbread Contest winners announced (PHOTOS)

Global Affairs and International Studies team earns first prize

The attention to detail that the Office of Global Affairs and International Studies team put into its Gingerbread Contest design earned the team first place at Ohio University's 10th Annual Gingerbread Contest on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Sponsored every year by Ohio University Catering and Culinary Services, the fun contest was held in the Maggie Davis Room and West 82 seating area on the first floor of Baker University Center. As construction of the gingerbread creations began at 8 a.m., the energy from the contestants in the room was like watching an episode of the popular PBS series, "The Great British Baking Show.” Individual members of the nine teams became dessert artisans as they transformed their visions into reality.

With the final touches of icing completed, the judging began at 3:15 p.m. The gingerbread creations were judged based on complexity, creativity and edibility of construction. In addition to first- through ninth-place awards, special recognition was given for Best in Class, Winter Wonderland, Most Original, School Spirit, Most Creative, Snowman’s Land, Candyland, Most Fun and Most Exotic.

The Office of Global Affairs and International Studies staffers took home top honors for their "Gingerbread Hall." The judges, who are food service professionals, were amazed at the fine details of their intricate design.

Global Affairs and International Studies staffers Elana Harnish and Brianne Dowler accepted for their team the first place award, as well as Best in Class and Winter Wonderland recognition. Harnish and Dowler said that they came up with the dollhouse concept at the end of last year’s contest. Inspiration for their team’s design came from South Green and its catwalks. In addition to Harnish and Dowler, their team included Lorinda Collins, Diane Cahill, Bose Maposa, Kell Morton, Nick Claussen, Marian Carr, Gloria Balch, Ji-Yeung Jang and Lorna Jean Edmonds.

“As a team, we used white boards and created a plan,” said Harnish. “Then we simplified the design to concentrate on fine details.”

When asked how they felt about winning first place, “We really wanted to win it!” Dowler exclaimed. “But we are most happy to raise name recognition on campus of our department – Global Affairs and International Studies.”

This year’s Gingerbread Contest proved to be a great activity for OHIO’s members to come together, have fun, as well as be recognized and awarded for their participation. All nine teams won pizza from West 82 Food Court.
