OHIO to celebrate International Education Week Nov. 13-18

Ohio University will celebrate International Education Week (IEW) in November by welcoming an award-winning playwright and journalist/TV host to Athens while also holding a wide range of entertaining and informative events focused on the importance of a global education.

International Education Week 2016 will be held Nov. 13-18 on the main and regional campuses as the University takes part in the national recognition of the week, which is dedicated to celebrating the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

The OHIO events will feature the always popular International Dinner, the Global Health Case Competition, a series of faculty workshops, the Global Engagement Awards Gala and the keynote speech, among other events. This year’s schedule includes:

  • The International Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 13. Hosted by the International Student Union in the Baker University Center Ballroom, the dinner boasts delicious global food options and an entertaining atmosphere each year.
  • The Office of Global Opportunities Photo Display, which will open to the public on Monday, Nov. 14, and will feature images taken by students on study away programs.
  • Three Global Relations Forums hosted throughout the week by the Office of Global Affairs and International Studies. The forums will give OHIO faculty and staff the opportunity to share their engagement in selected countries, regions and continents of the world and explore ways to deepen the relationships. The forums are being divided into sessions that will focus on Japan, China and Africa.
  • The “Managing Today’s Global Classroom: Engaging Diverse Populations” workshops, which will be held throughout the week for faculty members.
  • A Monday, Nov. 14, student forum on developing global perspectives.
  • A Tuesday, Nov. 15, reception to celebrate the publication of the new book, “Modern Muslims, A Sudan Memoir,” by faculty member and Center for International Studies Director Steve Howard.
  • The Global Health Case Competition. On Tuesday, Nov. 15, OHIO students will make their presentations as part of the competition, and on Wednesday, Nov. 16, the winners will be announced during the Global Engagement Awards Gala.
  • The Global Engagement Awards Gala, which will be held in Nelson Commons on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The event will honor faculty, staff and alumni for their outstanding achievements at OHIO and around the world. Also during the evening, a faculty member from Chubu University in Japan will receive the annual Tanaka-OHIO Award for Excellence in Global Engagement.
  • The keynote speech on Thursday, Nov. 17, which will feature Wajahat Ali, a journalist, writer, lawyer, television host, consultant for the U.S. government and award-winning playwright. A witty and emphatic speaker, Ali also serves as the creative director of Affinis Labs, where he works to create social entrepreneurship initiatives that have positive impacts for marginalized communities. In addition, he works to empower social entrepreneurs, young leaders and communities to come up with innovative solutions for global problems.
  • A wide range of events on the Zanesville Campus, including the Journey to Citizenship Panel Discussion and an International Street Food Buffet. The Zanesville Campus will also host an IEW display in the campus library.
  • The Ohio G.R.E.A.T. Symposium, held by the Ohio Department of Education, on the Dublin Campus. The symposium will bring together leaders from business, higher education and government in order to explore ways for Ohio, through its Global Reach to Engage Academic Talent (G.R.E.A.T.) initiative, to stimulate innovation and enhance Ohio’s global excellence.
