‘Managing Today’s Global Classroom’ workshop to be offered to faculty during IEW

Faculty members interested in learning new strategies for teaching diverse populations in their classrooms are invited to take part in a special workshop that will be held as part of Ohio University’s International Education Week in November.

“Managing Today’s Global Classroom: Engaging Diverse Populations” will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, and again on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The workshop is free and open to all faculty members, but those interested in taking part are asked to register for the day they want to attend. Participation will be limited to the first 15 registrants for each session. Lunch will be served at each session.

OHIO faculty members Dawn Bikowski, director of the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP), and Talinn Phillips, assistant professor of English, will lead the sessions, which will focus on common issues facing faculty members in all academic areas at OHIO. The workshops topics will include:

  • Strategies for teaching diverse populations
  • Ways to facilitate class discussions and increase participation between students from different backgrounds
  • Strategies to help students work through awkward conversations or communication breakdowns so they can communicate more effectively

Workshop participants will receive materials for later reference and will leave the sessions with strategies to try in their own classrooms.

Phillips and Bikowski have extensive experience working in global classrooms and are currently teaching the “Teaching with a Global Perspective: Supporting Domestic and International Students” semester-long course for OHIO faculty members.

The Tuesday, Nov. 15, workshop will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in Yamada International House 009.

The Wednesday, Nov. 16, workshop will be held from 10 a.m. until noon in Yamada International House 009.
