Homecoming 2016 promises to Paint the Town Green

The 14th annual Paint the Town Green Homecoming-themed decoration contest is underway and soon to be hitting the walls and windows of Ohio University departments and local Athens businesses.

Sponsored by the Student Alumni Board (SAB) and the Campus Involvement Center (CIC), Paint the Town Green invites local organizations, businesses and OHIO offices to spread Bobcat spirit by trimming their offices and buildings in green and white. Organizations are encouraged to get creative by modeling their displays after the Homecoming 2016 theme “All Roads Lead Home.”

“Paint the Town Green was created to help promote OHIO pride throughout Homecoming Week, and also as a way to connect the University and the town of Athens,” said Katrina Heilmeier, associate director of campus relations for the OHIO Alumni Association.

Participants are also welcome to sign up for a box and jar to collect canned food and change during the competition. These proceeds will benefit Pack the Pantry, a weeklong canned food drive for the Athens County Food Pantry occurring throughout Homecoming Week 2016.

Winners will be selected on Tuesday, Oct. 4 with categories ranging from Best Use of the Homecoming Theme to Best Window Display. University officials and Athens city representatives will present victors with special prizes, including plaques and trophies. All winners will be featured in OHIO Compass on Oct. 6 and announced during the Homecoming 2016 Yell Like Hell Pep Rally and the Homecoming 2016 parade.

"Paint the Town Green is a particularly special Homecoming event because it fosters Bobcat spirit both on and off campus, Heilmeier said. "Students, alumni and Athens locals can share enthusiasm for Homecoming, while also raising awareness for the needs in our community by collecting cans for the Athens Food Panty."

Wherever he travels, Dustin Starkey, BS ’98, always brings the Bobcat spirit with him.

The Sierra Nevada mountain range in Granada, Spain may be big, but Starkey shows his Bobcat pride is bigger.

Before zip lining through the jungles of Costa Rica, Starkey and his wife, Jessie Holtz, BA ’06, throw what they know: OU!

Like the ancient Chichen Itza in Yucatán, Mexico, their Bobcat spirit is sure to stand the test of time.

Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat, wherever you go. Spread your Bobcat pride and come back hOUme with even more!
