OHIO Alumni Association wins international award for collaborative Instagram campaign

The OHIO Alumni Association and its partners have won the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Silver Award for the 2015 Homecoming Instagram campaign #OHIO6Words. The category, ‘Best Uses of Social Media¾Alumni Relations,’ recognizes innovative uses of new media by educational institutions as part of the annual 2016 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards Program.

"The collaboration between the Association, Advancement Communications and Marketing, the Storytelling Institute, and the Campus Involvement Center was key to the success of #OHIO6Words,” said Jennifer Neubauer, assistant vice president for alumni affairs and executive director of the Association. “Each contributor, including the students and alumni who shared their own stories, should feel excited and proud that this innovative, multifaceted undertaking was such a resounding success. I am thrilled to have been part of a project that is being recognized internationally by our peers in CASE.”

The campaign was a joint effort developed to increase alumni engagement and build excitement for Homecoming 2015 and its theme ‘Same Bricks, Different Stories.’

The #OHIO6words concept was inspired by Ernest Hemmingway’s six-word story, and Smith Magazine’s Say it in 6 project. Coupled with an OHIO image, the campaign called for participants to share their own six-word story on Instagram using both the campaign and Homecoming hashtags. One winner was chosen each day of the campaign, and were sent exclusive swag and prizes from the online OHIO retailer, The Bobcat Store.

“The compressed nature of the task forced narrators to distill experience into a concise yet compelling account,” said Lynn Harter, co-director of the Storytelling Institute. “Contributors’ six-word memoirs coupled with their photographic images offered potent portraits of OHIO and its legacy.”

There were over 100 submissions to the #OHIO6Words Instagram campaign, and @OHIOalumni followers increased from 2,902 to 3,081 between Sept. 30 and Oct. 12. Twenty images were enlarged and displayed in Baker University Center during Homecoming to encourage alumni and students to create their own six-word story in person.

CASE received a record number of 3,356 contest submissions from around the world this year. Only 119 Silver Awards were given across the dozens of award categories.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is a professional association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas. CASE helps its members build stronger relationships with their alumni and donors, raise funds for campus projects, produce recruitment materials, market their institutions to prospective students, diversify the profession, and foster public support of education.
