Interim President David Descutner sends final message to University community

Interim President David Descutner sent the following message to the Ohio University community on Friday, June 9, 2017.

Dear friends,

I have been honored to serve as Ohio University’s president these last four months, but we are now on the cusp of a new presidency. Dr. Duane Nellis begins his tenure as our 21st president on Monday and, as interim president, I have had a front row seat to witness his remarkable transition. Trust me when I say this – Ohio University is being left in very capable hands. I am excited for the future of this great University.

Let me tell you a little bit about who Duane Nellis is:

He is curious. Throughout the transition process he has asked countless questions of me, Dr. McDavis, the trustees, academic colleagues, students and others as he tries to better understand this University he will soon lead.

He is committed. He is dedicated to working with the University community to elevate academic quality. The day after it was announced he would be president, he was already on the phone, calling trustees, deans, faculty, staff and alumni to introduce himself and to learn where Ohio University stands and the level to which it can rise. Not only does he believe in the value of higher education, he believes in the value of higher education here. He has regularly traveled to Athens from Texas to attend meetings of the various boards, learning about the unique challenges each group faces. He also has traveled to the Cleveland and Dublin campuses to learn more about the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s bright future and how they plan to address the national physician shortage. He is eager to tour our other regional campuses and get to know our faculty, staff, students and alumni scattered throughout the state and the country.

He is one of us. He may not have been a student at Ohio University, but he already understands what makes our University so distinctive. Watching the Class of 2017 graduate, he got a feel for the enthusiastic and hardworking nature of our student body, as well as the pride our faculty take in our students. Attending On The Green Weekend last month, he met with the many steadfastly committed alumni who pour so much of their heart into their alma mater. All that energy is infectious.

I am elated the Board of Trustees has chosen a president who is curious about the world, committed to academic excellence, and cares deeply about faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The experience he is bringing to this institution is invaluable and the vision he has for our future is inspiring. He is preparing to take Ohio University to the next level and is excited to get started.

On my final day as interim president, I want to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and affirmation over the last few months. It has been a privilege to serve our University, and my experiences have been rewarding and ever so memorable.

I hope you will all take a few moments to email president@ohio.edu and make him feel welcome at Ohio University!

Sincerely,

David Descutner
Interim President
