Meet April Classified Employee of the Month Nathan Sayre

Great job Nathan!

Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," provides a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.

How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?

I was really surprised and honored to be chosen, but I was especially happy to see someone from the Eastern Campus win.

What is your job title and how long have you worked it?

I’ve been a maintenance repair worker for about two years, but I’ve been with the University for more than 10 years. I started as a custodian, then moved to groundskeeper and finally took my current position.

What are the most enjoyable things about your job?

I love the fact that I do something different almost every day. Some days are more challenging than others, but that’s what makes it fun. I also like how the work I do can help make other people’s day more comfortable or enjoyable.

What is your hometown and where do you live now?

Belmont, Ohio. I grew up on a small farm about five minutes away from the Eastern Campus. I recently built a house on a farm near where I grew up.

What are your long-term goals?

I really enjoy working for Ohio University and hope to stay here and possibly continue to move up.

What was the last good book you read?

“Natural Beekeeping with the Warre hive” by David Heaf

If you weren’t in your present job, you would be working as a ______.

Probably something in the electrical field. I enjoy the challenge of troubleshooting electrical problems and finding a solution.

What things in life are most important to you?

Close friends and family, happiness and being myself.

Where is your favorite vacation destination?

Las Vegas. My wife and I have taken 14 trips there and continue to go back. I love the weather, fun, and how many comps you can get without actually spending a lot of money.

What are your hobbies?

Beekeeping, wine making, maintaining a large vegetable garden and traveling

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

If I said, then they would know!

What are your favorite TV shows?

King of Queens, Seinfeld, Wentworth, Lost, Life in Pieces, Heroes, Prison Break, 60 Days In

Who are your favorite musicians?

Mostly 90s and early 2000s alternative/rock and old country. Nirvana, Seether, Pearl Jam, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, etc.

What is the next big event you can't wait for?

We were planning a trip to Aruba, but had to postpone it, so rescheduling it and going to Aruba.

Who are the most annoying celebrities to you?

MTV’s Teen Moms and the Kardashians. Aren’t they everyone’s least favorite?

What is your dream car?

Any Lamborghini or any classic late 60s American muscle car.

What is your favorite saying or quote?

There’s nothing so bad that it couldn’t be worse.
